Flooding in Frodsham set to become old news
11 October 2007
Flooding around the Ship Street area of Frodsham should soon be a thing of the past, thanks to United Utilities.
The water company is investing £250,000 in the town to improve the reliability of the sewer network in a scheme that will last for four months.
Several homes and gardens on Ship Street have a history of flooding when the local sewers become overloaded during heavy rainfall.
Project Manager Zahir Ahmed said: "We understand what an awful experience it is to be affected by sewer flooding so this is really good news for these residents. The work we are about to begin will increase the capacity of the sewer network so that it can cope during storm conditions."
The solution is to lay 600 metres of new sewer pipe along Hawthorne Road and Ship Street to the fire station, with contractor Morgan Est carrying out the work on United Utilities' behalf.
In order for the work to be carried out safely Hawthorne Road will be closed for a period of 17 weeks. Temporary traffic lights will also be needed at other times.
Zahir said: "Some disruption is inevitable with engineering work on this scale but we have done our best to keep this to a minimum by liaising with the council about the traffic management measures. We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this essential work may cause. I hope residents will appreciate that some short term disruption is worthwhile for the long term benefits the scheme will bring."
Work will begin on November 5, near the junction of Weaver Lane and Ship Street, and the aim is to have the whole scheme completed by the end of February.
Between 2005 and 2010 United Utilities is spending £140 million across the North West tackling the issue of sewer flooding.
