Improvements in the pipeline for Congleton's water supply

11 December 2008

Congleton's water supply will soon be tasting better than ever thanks to United Utilities.

The company is replacing old cast-iron water pipes with modern plastic ones as part of its £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme for 2005-2010.

Engineers will be working from the junction of Thomas Street and Brown Street and then along Brown Street to the junction with Hatter Street.

Work will then continue along Hatter Street and finish up at the junction with Spragg Street.

The scheme - which starts on Monday, December 15 - is expected to take up to seven working days to complete.

United Utilities' Project Engineer Brian Jenkins said: "This improvement scheme is great news for Congleton's residents.

"We are improving not only the local drinking water supply but also the overall reliability of the network, which will be strengthened by the plastic pipes.

"This means there's much less risk of a water mains burst."

Some residents may experience parking restrictions where work is evident and there may also be some general traffic disruption in the area.

Brian added: "We want to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause.

"We are doing everything possible to keep disruption levels to a minimum and we will assist residents at the end of our working days to ensure access to properties is maintained.

"This is one of the many schemes our customers' bills help to fund and it will be well worth it when it is finished.

"We are pleased we can complete this work before Christmas and that residents can look forward to an even better water supply in the New Year and beyond."
