Road closure needed for Widnes sewer work

10 March 2010

The junction of Birchfield Road and Tuson Drive in Widnes is to be closed to through traffic this week for essential sewer improvement work.

The closure, which will be implemented on Wednesday, March 10 and is expected to be in place for up to eight weeks, is required so engineers working on behalf of United Utilities can safely install a new sewer pipe on Tuson Drive.

This work is part of a wider project to install a large underground storage tank on Birchfield Road, which will capture excess water during heavy rain and stop the local sewers from overwhelming.

This in turn will protect more than 10 local homes from flooding.

Tony Clinton, United Utilities' Project Co-ordinator, said: "We appreciate that the road closure may cause some temporary disruption, but sewer flooding is a very unpleasant and distressing business - and this scheme will be a welcome relief for those households affected."

Engineers will start installing the pipe from the junction of Birchfield Road towards Linden Way - finishing up close by to property number 11 Tuson Drive.

Tuson Drive will be accessible from the junction with Linden Way during the works, but there will be restricted access to customers' driveways along Tuson Drive when work is taking place outside their properties.

Residents are therefore advised to please make alternative parking arrangements as work progresses along Tuson Drive.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the eight-week working duration.

"We will do everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum, which will include doing what we can on-site to accommodate any specific requirements residents may have and keeping them up to date of our work as we go along," said Tony.

"We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause and we thank residents for their patience and understanding."
