About United Utilities

Within the United Kingdom we split our operations in two separate ways; regulated and non-regulated.

Regulated business

United Utilities is the UK's largest operator of water systems

United Utilities owns and operates the water network in north west England. The company supplies 2,000 million litres of water every day via a network of over 40,000 kilometres of water mains, over 1,400 kilometres of aqueduct and 95 water treatment works.

It covers a population approaching seven million people and 2.9 million households and business premises. The business is also a provider of water and wastewater services to over 400 industrial and commercial enterprises.

We work around the clock to supply clean, safe water to our customers' taps. We use technology and the natural water cycle to ensure that homes and businesses receive clean, safe drinking water on tap. We manage the catchment areas to collect and store water in our reservoirs before treating it and delivering it to homes and industry across the region. In the north west we maintain and operate:

  • 184 reservoirs
  • over 40,000 km of water mains
  • over 43,000 km of sewers
  • over 1,400 km of aqueducts
  • 95 water treatment works
  • 582 wastewater treatment works
