The first half of 2010 has been the driest period for the North West since our rainfall records began 74 years ago. Lack of rain means that reservoir levels are much lower than we would like them to be for this time of year.
However, by making small changes to how you use water you can make a big difference to our reservoir levels.
Flushing the loo takes up one third of the water we use every day. Fitting a save-a-flush device in your cistern saves around one litre of water every time you flush. Why not send for your free save-a-flush device today?

Please note that if you live in a house or flat built after 2000, we advise you not to fit the save-a-flush in your toilet cistern. Toilets fitted after 2000 tend to have a low-level flush, using only six litres of water, which is already water efficient. The toilet may not flush properly if a save-a-flush is fitted in these toilets. Also, the save-a-flush does not fit in a dual flush toilet (with two buttons) as these are also water efficient.
All toilets fitted in houses/flats before 2000 are normally flushed using nine or seven and a half litres of water and in these cases fitting a save-a-flush is an effective way of saving water.
The save-a-flush device contains super absorbent polymer and silica sand, which absorbs water when it is placed in the toilet cistern.
Make sure you keep it out of reach from children and animals. Information on how to install your save-a-flush is shown on the packet.
Please note, due to regulatory permissions, we can only send save-a-flushes to addresses within the United Utilities region.
Save-a-Flush fitting instructions
First of all, squeeze the save-a-flush to make sure all the air is removed.
Then lower the save-a-flush down into the bottom corner of the toilet cistern. Hold immersed for a few seconds, now flush the toilet allowing the device to sink.
Make sure the save-a-flush is towards the front of the cistern, between the ball valve and the front panel.
Allow about six hours for the save-a-flush to expand to full capacity and check the ball valve and overflow are not obstructed. If your toilet stops flushing properly please remove the save-a-flush from your cistern.
